What is TeachMe to SAIL - Comp. Crew Edition?
TeachMe to SAIL - Comp. Crew Edition is a specially written computer-based training (CBT) software program that takes a student through the entire RYA Shore course. (It is not a how to sail a boat simulator or game!).

What is the format of TeachMe to SAIL - Comp. Crew Edition?
The program will be available on one easy to use CD-ROM, then directly via the Internet. It uses the latest technology to make navigation through the program easy and straightforward.

What type of computer will I need to run TeachMe to SAIL - Comp. Crew Edition?
TeachMe to SAIL - Comp. Crew Edition will operate on any IBM PC with a Pentium processor.

• System Requirements: Windows 95, 98, NT4, 2000 or ME 8+ speed CD/DVD Drive Internet Explorer 4 or later 64Mb RAM (128Mb recommended) 12Mb disk space 800 x 600 screen resolution, minimum 16 million colours Optional printer .

Is there any technical support or student support?
Yes, both. The CD will have a detailed technical support section to help customers with technical queries plus technical support via the TeachMe Interactive website. There will be a dedicated student forum where students can discuss any issue (of the course) as well as answers and comments from RYA Instructors and Examiners.

Why should I use multimedia instead of just reading a textbook?
Scientific research has shown that as humans, we all learn in slightly different ways from each other. Some people can retain information better through visual stimulation and presentation. Others perform better if information is delivered using sound (auditory preference) and many of us find it easier to learn by doing (activity preference). Multimedia has two key advantages; first it offers stimulation to the user because they have to take an active role in using the software and secondly it can explain a complex issue with a type of media best suited to that particular issue. For example, reading how to tie a knot with a rope can be demonstrated very clearly with a video or animation, whereas a (static) line diagram in a book can be very complicated to follow.

How will I prepare for my practical?
As a student uses TeachMe to SAIL - Comp. Crew Edition, they will have the opportunity to test their knowledge and understanding using specially design multiple-choice questions. If there is confusion as to why a specific answer is the correct one, students can interrogate the program for an explanation.

How long does it take to complete the course?
However long you need! The most important thing to remember is that YOU decide what is right for YOU, not us.

When is the best time to start a course?
Anytime - there is no "right" or "wrong" time. Since the course is based on your schedule and time management, you can start today, next week or next month.

Do you provide other RYA courses?
Yes the full range of RYA courses.

I intend to do my sailing abroad after the course - is the course suitable for me?
Yes. The principles of sailing are common throughout the World. There are some minor differences in a few topics (buoyage and meteorology, but your tutor will cover these with you at the appropriate time).

I have limited computer ability - do you offer technical support?
Yes (and it's FREE). We understand that modern computers can be somewhat daunting if you have never used one before! If you have access to email, fax or the phone, we can guide through the TeachMe to SAIL - Comp. Crew Edition. The CD ROM has been specifically designed to be "user-friendly".

What qualifications do I need before starting a course?
None. As long as you understand English and have basic numeracy skills, you will have no problem coping with the course.
