How the course works

No previous knowledge is required before you start the course and everyone should be able to complete the course successfully if the suggested study time is completed. When you start the course, work at a pace to suit the time you have available.

It is neither desirable nor necessary to study for long periods of time and in fact better results are gained by using short periods of an hour or so. You should expect to take not less than 42 hours total study time for the complete course, plus a further 3 hours for the 2 final test papers. These are forwarded to you when you have completed all of the course exercises.

You may study the subjects in any order but you will find that they are set out in the logical order on the CD ROM. Use the exercises on the CD ROM to test your own progress and then complete the RYA exercise for each subject and return them to me for marking and comment. Keep a copy of your answers in case of loss.

You will find the large glossary a great help with all of the new words and terms that make the "nautical" language so rich.

There may be areas of the course that you have difficulty understanding: don't panic - we understand this and provide a tutorial support service. Remember that our team of RYA tutors are here to help you through the course, to give you tutorial help, mark your exercises, answer your questions and generally sort out any problems you may have.

You are able to contact me by telephone, email, fax, or post and exercises or queries may be sent to me by email, fax, or post. Remember that email is usually the fastest and least expensive method of contact. Those on the course click here for my personal contact details where you can talk to about all elements of the course and i will guide you to exam success.

When the exercises are complete and you have successfully completed the 2 final test papers the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Theory Course Completion Certificate will be issued, a justly deserved reward for all of your hard work.

TeachMe to SAIL - Day Skipper Edition has been carefully designed and written to be an easy to use home study aid.

The course content is fully supported by an Interactive Glossary and Quizzes to ensure that you are comfortable with marine jargon as it is used in the course. Each topic is carefully broken down into easy to understand (and navigate) sub topics. Each sub topic is fully supported by graphics, animation's, video and words on screen plus worked examples and a topic quiz at the end to test your comprehension of the content.

The course refers to RYA books and Admiralty charts as required so you can learn along with the programme, completing exercises on paper and watching simulations and videos to guide you along.

All in all you will have the benefits of multimedia, full 'human' backup and support materials required - making TeachMe to SAIL - Day Skipper Edition the most flexible and easiest way to learn!

Good luck with the course, Rob Marsh

Time Management

To complete this course, you should be spending a total of 40 - 45 hours studying (including doing the exercises). We do NOT suggest you "attack" the course by attempting to learn large chunks in one go - instead it would be better to study for 30 - 45 minutes and then take a break (cup of tea/watch TV/walk the dog etc).

Depending on your current knowledge, you may need to spend less time on some topics and more on others. This is normal since, for example, "Nautical Terminology" is more straightforward than say, "Position Fixing & Chartwork". You will be required to have your exercises marked by a qualified RYA Instructor. When you have completed the course, we will send you two exam papers which you must complete (on your own, no books or "help"), with someone acting as invigilator for you - once complete, return to us in the FREEPOST envelope, and we will send you your DAY SKIPPER SHOREBASED COURSE completion certificate (assuming you pass, naturally!).

Exam Preparation

The exam set by the RYA is designed to help you take command of a boat SAFELY and in such a way that in the (rare) event of a real emergency, you have the knowledge to act in a responsible and competent manner. The maxim "a little knowledge is dangerous" is very true in a marine environment since you may end up putting lives in jeopardy if your knowledge is superficial - this is partly why we include the Quiz to help you decide when you are ready to take the exam!
