Sailing Today review - Sept 2001 "We can recommend these CDs for interactive learning,
and the Competent Crew package is an effective primer for
boating beginners." COMPETENT CREW INTERACTIVE (£39.99) is the latest CD from TeachMe Interactive and forms part of its interactive training series. This second multi-media product complements the RYA practical course and follows the Day Skipper CD. The CD covers the basic knowledge beginners will need and information is clearly presented, making the most of a computer-aided learning system. It will take users a few minutes to learn how to get the best out of the package. The audio and video clips should help the novice sailor absorb information easily - if you want to practice knots, you can go over the footage repeatedly and pause for any tricky bits. You can listen to what sound signals sound like and see the Rules of the Road with moving vessels, etc. To use animations, QuickTime software is needed, and this can be downloaded from the CD. We particularly liked the glossary, which allows the inexperienced to type in key letters for explanations of nautical terminology. There's no RYA theory exam for Competent Crew, only a practical course, but the CD is a useful primer before going out on the water. The more advanced Day Skipper CD closely follows the RYA theory syllabus. There are three ways you can obtain your Day Skipper ticket: either by attending night school, an intensive week's course, or by doing a correspondence course. The Day Skipper CD can be used as a good revision aid or form part of a full correspondence course with tutorial support and a helpline. |
